Security and Fire Alarms
Alarm systems help to protect lives and property.
Security alarms for domestic use range from installing one or two motion sensors to cover the main points of entry to a property, to smart systems with a variety of sensors, CCTV, video doorbells and lights, all linked to a smart phone or tablet, allowing the system to be monitored remotely. Many of these systems can be linked to a remote control room service provided by the security system provider.
The cost of these systems is normally reflected in their complexity and on that basis, it is wise to weigh the cost and need against the perceived security risk. Where the risk is considered high, it is always best to have a residential system designed and installed by a security specialist.
A security system installed in a residential property may reduce the premium of an insurance policy, but it is also worth noting that a property being broken in to when left vacant with the alarm system not activated, may impact on any resultant insurance claim.
Security systems for commercial premises and public buildings are more complex and should be designed by security system specialists.
Fire alarms, or smoke alarms, are devices which detect fire, smoke and heat, then sound an alarm as a warning. They can be fitted to either the ceiling or a wall and allowing extra time to escape. Without a fire alarm fitted in a home, the occupants might not be aware that a fire has broken out, putting lives at greater risk.
There are in the main, four types of domestic fire alarm sensors;
- Ionisation – which detects small smoke particles in the air.
- Optical – these detect most fires quickly, including slow burning fires.
- Heat – which use a built-in thermometer to detect sudden increases in temperature.
- Combined – which use a combination of heat and optical.
Fire alarm systems for commercial premises and public buildings are more complex and should be designed by fire & gas specialists.
Before placing an order you will need to ensure that your chosen supplier has suitable experience, qualifications and insurance to perform the work.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
It is worth noting that a carbon monoxide detector is also a potentially lifesaving device that sounds an alert if it detects the presence of that odourless, tasteless and colourless gas. Some smoke alarms have a built-in carbon monoxide detector.
As of October 1st 2015, all landlords of private residential rental properties are required by law to install carbon monoxide detectors in any room that includes solid fuel burning fires and stoves.
