We are the husband and wife team of Derek and Barbara Askew. Derek is a Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Builder. He has worked as Inspector, Architect and Contractor on large (£135million PFI) and small projects. We have a wide technical knowledge and pride ourselves on a rapid turnaround. Derek has been examining buildings in the North East for over 25 years. Barbara is the Practice Manager, handling enquiries, booking appointments and finance.

Quality of service : I was paying for a grade three survey which was supposedly the most in depth service and the more expensive option the surveyor was in the property for less than an hour told me nothing about the state of the property and did not inspect much of the property either this surveyor was a waste of time and would not recommend him to anyone, he told me more about what he couldn't do more than what he could Building Surveys HARTLEPOOL, R SOULSBY - July 2018 Response from AC Surveys: We arranged to carry out a building survey for the client.Upon arrival at the property (a typical mid-terraced Victorian house), as I introduced myself to the seller, I was surprised to be informed thatthe client and his wife were already present (he had also arranged forhis builder to meet him there also andhe arrived after half an hour). I explained this would cause extra distractions and this was not our normal practice, but agreed to carry out my inspection. I was unable to enter the loft (as the access hatch was small and in a cupboard), also I could not inspect the sub-floor void (as there was no access at all). As a matter of courtesy Iinformed the client of the major findings andthe limits to this inspection (loft and sub-floor) before departing. The client was not satisfied with this and becamequite aggressive in telling me what I should have done. I attempted to defuse the situation (including obtaining the sellers consent to lift some carpeted areas, although this revealed nothing of interest) by going beyond my remit. Upon my return to the office, the client was already on the phone to Barbara complaining that the inspection had not been sufficient and that my report was inadequate. At this time no report had been written. I interrupted the call, to try to calm the situation, but the client was quite rude, so I exercised my right to cancel the instruction. I informed him of this immediately, and confirmed this soon after by e-mail (this is the first time I have had to take such action in my entire career).
