You are here: CABE (Chartered Association of Building Engineers)

CABE (Chartered Association of Building Engineers) is a leading body for professionals specialising in the design, construction, evaluation and maintenance of buildings. CABE evolved from the Incorporated Association of Architects and Surveyors prior to becoming the Association of Building Engineers and gaining a Royal Charter in December 2013.

We have nearly 6,000 members around the world in over 50 countries†, working in both the private and public sectors. We provide the prime qualification of Chartered Building Engineer, a title that exactly reflects the expertise of our members and their contribution towards society and the profession.

We support the profession by promoting best practice to everyone within the built environment and we encourage co-operation between industry associations. We lead on standards and legislation as well as assist in the development of national occupational standards. To achieve this, we closely work with the Construction Industry Council, the Building Research Establishment and the British Board of Agrement. We also sit on boards with the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Welsh Assembly and contribute towards Scottish Building Standards.

Encouraging Career Progression: From ‘Student’ to ‘Chartered Building Engineer’

At CABE, we want to make careers in the built environment more accessible as well as increasing people’s awareness of the exciting and varied careers of Chartered Building Engineers. We accredit university degree programmes at several educational establishments in the UK and around the world including the University of Westminster, the University of Hong Kong, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid and Trent Global College of Technology and Management.

To encourage career progression, we also have a variety of membership grades from ‘Student’ to ‘Chartered Member’ and ‘Chartered Fellow’, as well as a number of different entry routes based on the level of experience the individual has within the profession.

We offer both members and non-member the opportunity to attend CPD events across the UK and in Hong Kong through partner organisations. This helps Chartered Building Engineers maintain their high standard of professional knowledge. We have courses in Fire Safety, Safety, Sustainability, Regulations, Structural Design and the Management and Maintenance of Buildings.
