Electric Vehicle Charging Point
An electric vehicle can be charged at home, either by plugging it into a socket to take electricity from the grid or by plugging into a charging unit.
For home charging, 3-7 kW chargers are the most popular and are recommended for the UK market. Many UK residential properties have a single-phase (AC) electricity supply and can support the additional 7 kW load. Always check with the installer that your fuse board has enough spare capacity to support the additional load of a home charging station.
Most home charging points use either a tethered or socketed charge point.
A tethered charge point includes a long cable attached to the unit, it’s available with either a Type 1 or Type 2 connector. Most newly manufactured electric cars in the UK come with a Type 2 connector, but it's always worth checking with the manufacturer before purchasing a tethered charge point as it is limited to vehicles with one connector Type.
A socketed charge point comes without a cable and is fitted with the necessary safety devices to protect the user, car, and the home’s main fuse board. Socketed chargers are universal, because any electric car with a fast charging cable, can be used with the charger.
The benefit of a socketed charge point is that you can accommodate all electric vehicles, so if ever you decide to change your car, you are not limited to vehicles with a specific connector type.
The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a Government grant that provides a 75% contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation, up to a maximum of £350 (including VAT) per installation. The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle and has dedicated off-street parking at their property. The customer is required to choose an EVHS installer to install their charge point, who first checks that they qualify for the scheme and then applies on the customer’s behalf. The installer then issues an invoice to the customer for the cost of the installation, less the £350 grant.
